No label except for a tiny one that reads "adjustable head size" inside. An elephant gray color nubby silk jersey draped over a high wired frame and rounded shorter crown, and gathered at low snood back. Decorated with a few simple gold flower sequins. Excellent condition with just a minor "smushing" and perhaps one of the "daisy" sequins missing?? Hard to tell for sure.. or it could just be a pick in the jersey. Really 99% perfect. I ADORE these high turbans... and quite hard to find... and then the fact that it comes from Anita Loos? Well.... doesn't get much better. Can you just imagine where Anita might have worn this.... and in front of who?

Click on image for additional photos!#5263 - c. 1950's Long Tail Pheasant Feather Hat Owned and Worn by ANITA LOOS! These pheasant hats were very popular from the 1940's through the 1960's. Various styles and shapes, sometimes just a touch of pheasant, other times completely covered in pheasant feathers (as is this one)... along with two long tails which caress the face when worn. I have to tell you that this damn mannequin (shhhhh... don't tell her I cursed her!) has molded hair and so the hat wouldn't stay on her the right way, so it's on backward (I think). The long feathers will still end up this direction as you see, but on the other side of your head. Looks equally fabulous either way... but just so you know. Stays on the head as a kind of a very wide headband. Excellent condition. If you don't know who Anita Loos is, you should! WOW... enough adjectives for you! If you don't know who Anita Loos is, please just Google search her... you will be impressed! She wrote (among other things) "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"... one of Marilyn Monroe's most famous movie roles. Ms. Loos had a great collection of hats, which I just purchased, and along with that hat collection came a number of pairs of her shoes from the 1930s-1940s. These shoes have it all! High platform, white mini beading, peep toe, ankle strap, cutwork, and ultra high heels! What more could you want? Oh, I know... for them to be in a larger size. Sorry. All Ms. Loos' shoes are a small size 4.5 - 5, so they are for display, or as memorabilia piece from one of the most prolific female Hollywood writers! Or if you are one of those lucky girls with a size 4.5 foot.....

Thin brown mottled and ivory feathers on a brown felt base in a cloche or helmet shape especially great for those "bad hair" days! I'm pretty sure I saw a photo of Anita in this, or similar hat (I have another of hers of a similar feather hat also from Bergdorf Goodman with striped gray feathers, so she obviously liked this style). Very Good condition... not excellent as the top spot of the crown where all the feather start has slight wear. You could cover with a few extra feathers to make nearly perfect again. Will fit a normal sized head. This hat is will come with the velvet covered hat stand - as this was how it was originally found. If you don't know who Anita Loos is, you should! Click on image for additional photos!#5210 - c. 1950's RARE Original ROBERT DUDLEY Hat Owned and Worn by ANITA LOOS! OH.... MY.... GOD!!! I call this the "flying nun" hat... yes, I'm that old... back to when Sally Fields was playing a teenager, not a grandmother on TV. This is a rare Robert Dudley hat. From the NY TIMES, obit on Nov.4, 1992: "Robert Dudley, was a New York milliner whose hats for women were popular in the 1940's and 1950's. Many of Mr. Dudley's designs are in the collection of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). His large clientele included many theater and society figures and he designed hats for several films, including "Rebecca." During the 1940's and 1950's he operated the Chez Robert salon at Saks Fifth Avenue and his own shop, Robert Dudley Originals, on the East Side of Manhattan". So, prior to "the Mad Hatter: Bes-Ben in Chicago", there was Robert Dudley who, along with the likes of Elsa Schiaparelli (influenced by Dali) designed highly surreal hats. Schiaparelli had one shaped like a high-heeled shoe while Dudley designed a set of war hats, which included huge 3-D depictions of cannon, torpedo, periscope, and even a hat depicting Hitler... complete with mustache (again, this was 1939 prior to the horrors of WWII). Anita Loos loved her hats, and I bought her entire collection, which included some fantastical pieces like this of blue velvet, sculpted into this stiff "flying" hat. A rare piece indeed! And if you don't know who Anita Loos is, you should! Click on this link... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anita_Loos) FROM THE ESTATE OF ANITA LOOS!

I haven't seen anything like this before... well, I shouldn't say that because Anita Loos had TWO of these... one in sable (here) and the other of white ermine fur! Both with large velvet bows at the front. You know what sable feels like... fantastic (!), so you will be petting yourself when wearing this. I'm not sure exactly how they were worn... if the bow was at the front of the hairline, or farther back on the crown, but this damn mannequin (shhhhh... don't tell her I cursed her!) has molded hair and so I just stuck it on her head wherever it might stay put long enough for the photos. But on you... it will stay on the head with a comb attached at the front. Excellent condition. If you don't know who Anita Loos is, you should! Click on image for additional photos!#5216 - c. 1940's ROBERT DUDLEY, Creator of Hats, New York Lavender Felt Molded Hat Trimmed in Burgundy Grosgrain Ribbon and Bow! Owned and Worn by ANITA LOOS! Very little is written about Robert Dudley, but there should be more well known.... and certainly renowned! From his obit, Robert Dudley was a New York milliner whose hats for women were popular in the 1940's and 1950's. He passed away in 1992 at 87 years old. Born in Rochester, he studied at the Eastman School of Music there and had come to New York City intent on a career in the theater. He decided instead on a career in millinery after he used an old felt hat to create a new one for a friend. His large clientele included many theater and society figures and he designed hats for several films, including "Rebecca." During the 1940's and 1950's he operated the Chez Robert salon at Saks Fifth Avenue and his own shop, Robert Dudley Originals, on the East Side of Manhattan. Many of Mr. Dudley's designs are in the collection of the Fashion Institute of Technology. "He was very creative, and designed hats to go with different costumes." Some 1940s ads show quite whimsical hats designed by Dudley...sometimes just for show. This is one of his early fantastic hats for definite wear! What a wonderful shape. I show from all the different angles so you can see. It's a cloche look from one side, and a different look from other sides. Excellent condition. I believe this is one of his early labels... different from the others I have. This hat was owned by Anita Loos. If you don't know who Anita Loos is, you should! Anita Loos had a collection of hats.... and I bought them all! She obviously had enough money to buy the best of the best... with quite a few Balenciaga hats. She never bought the plain hats, but rather fun styles and shapes. I've been blabbing too much lately in the descriptions, so I will let the hat speak for itself. Do you speak "hat"? :) She's saying that the twist of this hat is stiff... just meant to look as though it's a soft twisted towel! Quite unique and whimsical while being high-fashion at the same time!! J'adore it! Excellent condition. If you don't know who Anita Loos is, you should! Anita Loos had a collection of hats.... and I bought them all! She seemed to have a fascination for these teeny, tiny hats.... so small that some of them look like either doll's hats, or samples of full-sized hats, but they were just worn as fascinators are worn today... as a little accent on the hair! Also, Ms. Loos had quite a few high-end and originally quite expensive Balenciaga hats. This one is a black velvet mini pillbox hat with "velvet curly noodles" on top (come on, what else am I going to call this??). Measures a very small 5" x 4.5" x 2" high. Held on with two haircombs attached. Excellent condition. Oh, and if you don't know Anita Loos is, you should! All the information I have on Robert Dudley is written above with the other Robert Dudley hat from this same collection. So go up this page a bit and read about him. OK... are you back now? So now we come to this very large sort of pumpkin colored velvet hat with open crown filled with black stiff netting, and then tons of black curly feathers sitting all around the wide stiff brim of the hat. Looks lovely on! Excellent condition with just a couple of the feathers at the back that just need to be trained back to formation (a drill sergeant should do the trick! :) Otherwise great. Rare to find any Dudley hats... and larger hats are harder to find as they were always harder to store over all the years. Relatives would just discard instead. Sad, but true! However... lucky me, this hat only had a two previous owners.... Anita Loos and the gentleman who was given her hat collection on her death.... oh, and then me... and then YOU! As you know (and if you don't, read up on Ms. Loos), she was a part of the Hollywood community and this hat was certainly a costume piece... from something. The question is... from what? It's crazy tall off-white organdy on horsehair and stiff net base cone hat teeming with tiny roses and dangling rhinestones. A wonderful piece.... I just have to hope that someone out there knows what this is from. Most all Ms. Loos' hats are from the 1930's - 1950's, so I'm this this is as well. Excellent condition. RARE color in a nearly neon green with a fairly stiffened purple grosgrain ribbon and bows. Worn as a "doll or tilt" hat as it has the thin elastic band to hold on the head. Elastic still has a bit of stretch to it. Looks like this was hardly worn! Excellent, near mint condition. The material is hard to describe... almost like a canvas. LOVE the shape, and the double-layered brim. FROM THE ESTATE OF ANITA LOOS!

This is one of the Robert Dudley hats from the collection with the RTW label rather than the original striped label, but still lovely, and different. Ivory woven large "bow" cutouts attached to a stiffened matching ivory net base. Fairly flat shape on the head. Just sits on top. Quite pretty on. Very good condition with just some small age spots here and there (very light rust color - and very small!). Hard to know if the hat is slightly flattened, but will fill out on the head. You can see a bit of thread in the design of the hat, so I wonder what that means. I could come up with reasons, but I will just state the fact ma'm, just the facts. FROM THE ESTATE OF ANITA LOOS!
SOLD#5204 - Original GEORG BEIGEL, Paris Hat Owned and Worn by ANITA LOOS! Also one of my favorites (how many times can I say that?). I have one other Georg Beigel hat from a museum collection which is dated by the expert at 1943. Not sure the exact date of this hat but it's certainly the 40's. How fabulous!! Black faux bird at front with extremely long feathers to surround the face or head or whatever depending how you wear it. $ 845. SOLD

SOLD#5265 - c. late 1930's/early 1940's Brown Felt Hat with Large Graded Feathers Owned and Worn by ANITA LOOS! This is a reddish brown felt that is dated somewhere between the "caps" of the 1930's and the tilt or doll hats of the 1940's. Great condition with the exception of the fact that the brown netting is torn, but if you just leave on top of the hat as you see, the tearing doesn't show. Love the large feather "wings" on the side!! Sits beautifully on top of the head. Even fits my larger head size mannequin, or use a hat pin for security. SOLD on LAYAWAY#5247 - c. 1950's ALFREDA, New York Black Beaded Felt Hat Owned and Worn by ANITA LOOS! Fantastic hat! Gotta love it. Fits perfectly like a cap on a normal sized 22" head (the mannequin has a slightly large head - must be all those brains she has!), so it will fit a little more "cloche-like" on you. Beaded all over with teeny tiny black beads and sequins in a 3-D effect. Then comes that great huge beaded circle at one side with the stiff black felt pieces (what do I call those??). The only other Alfeda hat I found was from the 1960's, and that added "Paris" to the label, so obviously this designer label was well-respected enough to interest the Parisian market! And certainly wonderful enough to interest Anita Loos! :)Excellent condition. If you don't know who Anita Loos is, you should! Click on the link below! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anita_Loos $ 645. SOLD#5225 - c. 1940's/1950's Made to Order Hat, BERGDORF GOODMAN On the Plaza, New York Unique "Package" Magenta Satin Toque Hat with Bow! Owned and Worn by ANITA LOOS! Anita Loos had a collection of hats.... and I bought them all! I just love the fact that she purchased unique shapes and styles! Nothing basic! And nothing inexpensive!! :) This was specially made to order at the high-end Bergdorf Goodman store. In the 1960's, Halston began his career designing hats for Bergdorf under this same label. Though this was earlier. I've also seen Balenciaga Bergdorf Made to Order hats, so who knows who actaully designed this on! Love the shape and color or a magenta satin. It's stiff, though has the look of being "gathered" by the bow. Most likely created to match a particular outfit for Ms. Loos. Excellent condition.
