Click on image for additional photos# 5237 - RARE c. 1960's BERGDORF GOODMAN Tiny Black Silk Floral Ball Hat Owned and Worn by ANITA LOOS! HOORAY!!! I found not one, but TWO photos of Anita Loos wearing the matching WHITE silk flower ball hat! It's hard to even call it a hat as it's a tiny little thing held on the head with two haircombs on either side. Ms. Loos had quite a few of these tiny mini hats, many from Bergdorf Goodman, so you will see more up on this website soon. But meanwhile... this is the next best thing to the "pièce de résistance" or "holy grail" of the hats I have of Ms. Loos BECAUSE of the photos of her in it! The white one was sold... this is the only other one exactly like this in black rather than white. I've been searching for other photos of Anita in the rest of the hats, but sadly there are so few photos of her found wearing any hats... and the few I have found were likely taken before this hat collection of hers was amassed. The fact that this style hat was shown on Ms. Loos' head that makes this SO incredibly special! Excellent condition. Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece.

Click on image for additional photos# 5227 - RARE c. 1960's BERGDORF GOODMAN Tiny Gold Lame Straw Hat and Gold Netting Owned by ANITA LOOS! Anita Loos LOVED these tiny, barely there hats! Some people might call them Salesman Sample hats, or even doll hats, but from what I can gather, these were meant to be worn even though they look so small it's hard to believe. But from the photograph of Ms. Loos wearing the white flower tiny ball hat, these ARE real hats! Even the length of the veil is telling. Ms. Loos had quite a few of these tiny mini hats, many from Bergdorf Goodman. I've been searching for other photos of Anita in the rest of the hats, but sadly haven't found that many photos of Ms. Loos during this era. I'm lucky to have photos of Ms. Loos in the white floral tiny hat I got in this collection!! That hat has been SOLD. This one is a great gold lame straw (in the shape of a hat) with gold lame net veil. Would need a hat pin to hold on the head. Excellent condition except the veil has some breaks and the hat is curled at back. Not sure if it's supposed to be, or it needs to be steamed back out straight (as the others are straight). I'm leaving as is as I'm not sure what is correct, but LOVE gold lame straw!! This is how these tiny hats were worn in the 1939 Anita Loos' movie "The Women". Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece. To think you can wear the gloves that adorned Ms. Loos.... and all the history that goes along with that!! As you can see.... these are a wearable size (as opposed to some older gloves that are so tiny, they are useless). Marked size 7. Marked Nutine? She had a few pairs with the same marking... must have been a good brand. Excellent condition... but they were worn. 10" from tip to bottom. Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece. Click on image for additional photos!# 5224 - Original Hat Owned by ANITA LOOS! I hate to even put this hat up on the website without knowing more about it. As you know (and if you don't, read up on Ms. Loos), she was a part of the Hollywood community and this hat was certainly a costume piece... from something. The question is... from what? It's crazy tall off-white organdy on horsehair and stiff net base cone hat teeming with tiny roses and dangling rhinestones. A wonderful piece.... I just have to hope that someone out there knows what this is from. Most all Ms. Loos' hats are from the 1930's - 1950's, so I'm this this is as well. Excellent condition. As far as I know, this hat only had a two previous owners.... Anita Loos and the gentleman who was given her hat collection on her death.... oh, and then me... and then YOU! A hand painted envelope addressed to Anita Loos at her home address "postmarked" Xmas day from the 2-year-old grand nephew of John C. Wilson (the man who staged the Broadway production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes) and the godson of Anita Loos. According to John C.W. Macauley, his mother would have been the one to create this masterpiece to send to Anita. SOLD# 5198 - RARE c. 1960's (?) JEANNE LANVIN, Made in France Honey Colored Straw Cloche Hat! Owned by ANITA LOOS! As is written in the 1967 Karlyne Anspach, book, The Why of Fashion, and in the 2002 James Laver book, Costume and Fashion - A Concise History, "In her quest to give women a total appearance of youthfulness and femininity Mme Jeanne Lanvin took an interest in new hairstyles. When Anita Loos of “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” fame attended a showing by Lanvin in Europe, Mme Lanvin was so impressed with her extremely short hair that she had her mannequins copy the style. The short bobbed hair cut popularized by Lanvin’s models in the late 1920s was known as the “Pierrette” hair-style." So... Anita Loos and Jeanne Lanvin had quite a long history together!! I have seen photos of Ms. Loos wearing similar hat in black, but have yet to find a photo of her in this hat, but it was certainly her style! I'm dating to the 1960s, but it could be earlier... but the label is post 1960s. Great condition with the exception of a small slight "smudge" (see photo). SOLD# 5226 - RARE c. early 1940's Doll/Toy/Tilt Hat "Made in New York by MADAME SUZY, Made to Order Hat from Bergdorf Goodman, Fifth Ave. at 58th Street" Owned and Worn by ANITA LOOS! One of the most RARE hats in Ms. Loos' collection is this Made to Order hat from Bergdorf Goodman, NY and designed and made by the prominent Parisian hat designer, MADAME SUZY during the WWII years when she left Paris during the occupation and moved to NYC. I found an old advertisement from 1941 announcing Madame Suzy at Bergdorf Goodman! One of the hats in that ad is certainly similar to this one. And from a 1935 Newspaper article: "All the world knows Madame Suzy. That modest label in a hat means that sheer magic has been mixed in its creation, for 'Madame Suzy' is veritably a magician of millinery.... Royalty and new-rich can be seen here (at her Parisian shop). When the Duchess of Kent was buying her trousseau in Paris, dozens of boxes from 'Suzy' found their way to the quiet flat where she was living with her parents prior to her wedding. At all races, at all receptions, chic hats bear that label." This hat is not in perfect condition as there is some fabric fading or years of dust imbedded to the mint green and there is extreme minor wear at edges. Most everyone else would call it great condition, I'm just very picky! A unique label on a great hat. Many Madame Suzy hats are found in major museums around the world. Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece. $ 745. SOLD

SOLD# 5206 - c. 1940's/1950's RARE Original ROBERT DUDLEY Large "Roses and Branches" Hat Owned and Worn by ANITA LOOS! It's really incredible how little information is found about Robert Dudley. You'll find his hats in major museums, and according to his obit, he had a large clientele included many theater and society figures. He also designed hats for several films, including "Rebecca." And that's just about all the info you find. Pretty sad for someone who was obviously a top milliner with exciting, unique hats... many of which were owned by Anita Loos, so you will see quite a few on my website! I have found 3 different Robert Dudley labels. This red/white/blue "flag" label seems to be the most rare and his earliest hats. These labels seem to have been hand signed, as I have one of his hats with this ribbon label with NO signature AND the signatures on each hat I DO have are not identical!!! This hat is the most spectacular of the Dudleys with openwork of "branches" around the brim, covered with silk roses and flowers. Cranberry velvet crown is slightly worn (see photos) and comes with the original velvet hatpin. Will fit a normal 22" head with the "heart" wires at sides. Measures: 18" x 14"! SOLD# 5210 - c. 1950's RARE Original ROBERT DUDLEY, New York Hat Owned by ANITA LOOS! OH.... MY.... GOD!!! I call this the "flying nun" hat... yes, I'm that old... back to when Sally Fields was playing a teenager, not a grandmother on TV. This is a rare Robert Dudley hat. From the NY TIMES, obit on Nov.4, 1992: "Robert Dudley, was a New York milliner whose hats for women were popular in the 1940's and 1950's. Many of Mr. Dudley's designs are in the collection of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). His large clientele included many theater and society figures and he designed hats for several films, including "Rebecca." During the 1940's and 1950's he operated the Chez Robert salon at Saks Fifth Avenue and his own shop, Robert Dudley Originals, on the East Side of Manhattan". So, prior to "the Mad Hatter: Bes-Ben in Chicago", there was Robert Dudley who, along with the likes of Elsa Schiaparelli (influenced by Dali) designed highly surreal hats. Schiaparelli had one shaped like a high-heeled shoe while Dudley designed a set of war hats, which included huge 3-D depictions of cannon, torpedo, periscope, and even a hat depicting Hitler... complete with mustache (again, this was 1939 prior to the horrors of WWII). Anita Loos loved her hats, and I bought her entire collection, which included some fantastical pieces like this of blue velvet, sculpted into this stiff "flying" hat. A rare piece indeed! And if you don't know who Anita Loos is, you should! Click on this link... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anita_Loos) Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece.

The front is so cool with the double layers of brown felt loops... and this is all positioned on top of a basic "cap" shape. It's kind of a combination of the 1930s skull caps and the 1940s tilt top/top/doll hats. It's like it's the missing link of millinery! Here's another scene from "The Women" (1939) with Norma Shearer wearing a hat with similar loopy design (this one designed by Adrian!). Excellent condition. SOLD# 5274 - c. 1930's FLORENCE REICHMAN, 16 East 52nd Street, New York 2-tone Felt Hat! Owned by ANITA LOOS! This is one of those true designer hats. Simple felt in two colors shaped to create an exciting tall 30's hat that twists and turns, yet not stiff. In researching Florence Reichman, I find that she was considered one of the high-fashion milliners of the 30's and 40's... often mentioned in 1940's articles with the likes of John Frederics (Mr. John) and Lilly Dache. She patented her designs (that's how unique). Especially known for her unique designs and shapes. Excellent condition. Fits a normal size 22" head. A special hat. You'll find some 1940's newsreel footage of Ms. Reichman's hats if you look hard enough... here's the link to one: http://www.efootage.com/stock-footage/75747/New_Fall_Hats/ Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece. $ 735. SOLD# 5212 - c. 1950's ROBERT DUDLEY, New York Shiny Golden Ecru Hat with Large Original Red Rose Owned by ANITA LOOS! Another rare hat from Anita Loos' hat collection! This one is a fairly tame Robert Dudley hat... great sheen (like a hint of gold lame) to the golden tone ecru stiff fabric with matching pleated band with one huge red silk rose hanging off the side. Comes with Anita's hatpin, possibly original to the hat. Excellent condition except for extreme minor issues to sewing at edge. Hardly worth mentioning, but photographed for you. Measures: 14" x 13.5". Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece. $ 485. SOLD

SOLD# 5216 - c. 1940's ROBERT DUDLEY, Creator of Hats, New York Lavender Felt Molded Hat Trimmed in Burgundy Grosgrain Ribbon and Bow! Owned by ANITA LOOS! Very little is written about Robert Dudley, but there should be more well known.... and certainly renowned! From his obit, Robert Dudley was a New York milliner whose hats for women were popular in the 1940's and 1950's. He passed away in 1992 at 87 years old. Born in Rochester, he studied at the Eastman School of Music there and had come to New York City intent on a career in the theater. He decided instead on a career in millinery after he used an old felt hat to create a new one for a friend. His large clientele included many theater and society figures and he designed hats for several films, including "Rebecca." During the 1940's and 1950's he operated the Chez Robert salon at Saks Fifth Avenue and his own shop, Robert Dudley Originals, on the East Side of Manhattan. Many of Mr. Dudley's designs are in the collection of the Fashion Institute of Technology. "He was very creative, and designed hats to go with different costumes." Some 1940s ads show quite whimsical hats designed by Dudley...sometimes just for show. This is one of his early fantastic hats for definite wear! What a wonderful shape. I show from all the different angles so you can see. It's a cloche look from one side, and a different look from other sides. Excellent condition. I believe this is one of his early labels... different from the others I have. This hat was owned by Anita Loos. If you don't know who Anita Loos is, you should! SOLD# 5323 - c. 1954 Checkerboard Raffia Sunhat with Gold Accents Owned and Worn by ANITA LOOS! Again... I know this isn't the exact hat that Anita Loos is wearing in the photo, but it just shows that when she liked a style, she tended to have more than one of that look.... just like the rest of us! And she is wearing the similar one in a documented meeting with Salvatore Ferragamo and none other than Audrey Hepburn on August 21, 1954 in Florence, Italy. (Audrey played Gigi, which was adapted for the stage by Ms. Loos). Anyway, the hat is just flat that snaps at the back to create the conical shape (great for travel!). Tied with just a rope! There is a bit of a spot at the front (see photos) but still very cool piece!!! Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece. $ 245. SOLD

SOLD# 5241 - c. 1940's BALENCIAGA, 10 Avenue George V, Paris Black Satin Twist Toque Hat! Owned by ANITA LOOS! Anita Loos had a collection of hats.... and I bought them all! She obviously had enough money to buy the best of the best... with quite a few Balenciaga hats. She never bought the plain hats, but rather fun styles and shapes. I've been blabbing too much lately in the descriptions, so I will let the hat speak for itself. Do you speak "hat"? :) She's saying that the twist of this hat is stiff... just meant to look as though it's a soft twisted towel! Quite unique and whimsical while being high-fashion at the same time!! J'adore it! Excellent condition. If you don't know who Anita Loos is, you should! SOLD# 5239 - c. 1950's BALENCIAGA, 10 Avenue George V, Paris Tiny Mini Pillbox Hat of Black Velvet! Owned by ANITA LOOS! Anita Loos had a collection of hats.... and I bought them all! She seemed to have a fascination for these teeny, tiny hats.... so small that some of them look like either doll's hats, or samples of full-sized hats, but they were just worn as fascinators are worn today... as a little accent on the hair! Also, Ms. Loos had quite a few high-end and originally quite expensive Balenciaga hats. This one is a black velvet mini pillbox hat with "velvet curly noodles" on top (come on, what else am I going to call this??). Measures a very small 5" x 4.5" x 2" high. SOLD# 5268 - c. 1940's TOWN SHOP, Buffalo Red Crepe Fabric Wavy Hat! Owned and Worn by ANITA LOOS! Such a wonderful shape!! This hat will look good on just about every head... even if you don't have a "hat" face. Yeah, I know all about it. My twin sister, Wendy, looks great in just about every hat she has ever tried on. I need hats with large brims to even have a chance of the hat looking good on me. But to have a large brim with "ruffles"... well.... can't get much better than that!!! And in a perfect lipstick red! The interesting other feature on this hat is that there are two thread "loops" at the top of the crown. I wonder if those were there to add a feather?????? I don't know. Just guessing. So now look at the additional photos to see that there is a SECOND brim of navy under the red ruffle brim! So you can wear this hat down on the forehead (as I show), or up on the back of the head to show off the navy. Interesting open "v" at back with bow and navy netting at back. Hat is held on with the thin elastic band (usually worn under the hair). Nettings are rarely perfect condition, and can always be replaced if you need perfection. Lilly Dache was one of the top milliners from the era. And would have been expensive when new. This hat is great but is one that isn't in as great a condition as some of Ms. Loos' other hats. It really could use a professional steaming on the silk flowers to perk them up, and as you see, the heavy netting is torn at back and the lining is discolored. Peach and chartreuse flowers and gold-ish satin bow/ribbon on a black straw with embroidery! And then... an adorable blue felt cut into the shape of a bluebird with beak! Cute! SOLD# 5208 - c. early 1940s Original ROBERT DUDLEY, NY Hat Owned and Worn by ANITA LOOS! These labels seem to have been hand signed, as I have one of his hats with this ribbon label with NO signature!!!! This hat is a bright kelly green soft felt in an interesting tall shape with wide folded, pinched and cut brim. Excellent condition. Will fit a normal 22" head. Obviously this milliner was influenced by the whimsy of Schiaparelli's hats of the era. I'm not even sure how to describe it... so I will just let the photos do that they are intended to do. Held on by the thin elastic cord that usually is hidden under the hair, though this hat might need a few hat pins as well. Ms. Loos had a few hats from Buffalo... must have been a place she visited more than once. Excellent condition. The netting is always questionable on old hats, but easy to replace if necessary. I dare you to find a similar hat anywhere! :) And check out the photo of Rosalind Russell from "The Women" (1939). As described by the MET (Metropolitan Museum of Art): "During the 1930s, '40s and the early '50s, when hats were considered required accessories for well-dressed women, Sally Victor was among the foremost American milliners. Creative and very successful for almost 40 years, Victor began her prolific millinery career in 1927. According to her May 16, 1977 obituary in The New York Times, Victor described her mission simply as 'designing pretty hats that make women look prettier.' You will find Sally Victor hats in many top museums including the MET. This hat is a simple, but unique hat of two colors of felt shaped to create a classic wide brimed 30's sexy hat. Great one to wear with a day suit or dress! Excellent condition, except there are some minor moth nips only seen in certain lights, but I'm highlighting them for you to see. # 5285 - c. 1940's/1950's RARE Original VALENTINA Black Velvet Hat! Owned by ANITA LOOS! Valentina was one incredible lady. Not to be confused with the Valentina Ltd beaded dresses/tops from the 1960s. Nope. This was THE Ukrainian born Madame Valentina, one of America’s few great couturiers. She dressed some of the biggest stars of the ’30s and ’40s, including Greta Garbo, Lillian Gish, Lynn Fontanne, Merle Oberon and Katharine Hepburn (who she transformed from a tomboy to a siren in The Philadelphia Story using a white crepe dress) and dressed prominent New York society women including members of the Vanderbilt family. Valentina’s garments cost a fortune! To a young actress who balked at the price of one of her gowns, Valentina replied, “You ask price for dress that change your whole life?”She imperiously turned away clients that she felt wouldn’t do her garments justice, and tormented others. She was notorious for giving clients what she thought the needed, not what they requested. In 1952, Life magazine reported that her maxim to clients was "take it or take it," also noting that "a buyer who arrives to be fitted in a red dress may find that Valentina has decided it should be blue." Read FIDM blog for a great bio: http://blog.fidmmuseum.org/museum/2010/10/valentina-hat.html Valentina offered her clients headwear to coordinate with their Valentina garments. So this hat likely went with one of her creations. We'll never know what, but you can be assured it was fabulous! Valentina hats seem to be quite rare. I have only seen one other... currently at FIDM. This one is simple and perfect. Excellent condition. And POSSIBLY the one seen in the photo of Anita Loos. Can be worn as you see, or farther back on the head (though my mannequin has molded hair, so this was the only way she would wear it. :) Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece.

SOLD# 5266 - c. 1910's O'BRIEN, Buffalo Black Horsehair Hat Owned by ANITA LOOS! This is the oldest hat from the collection of Anita Loos. It's important as it could date to about 1912 which was the year of Ms. Loos' first film... about a hat (of all things!). The New York Hat (1912) is a short silent film directed by D. W. Griffith from a screenplay by Anita Loos, and starring Mary Pickford, Lionel Barrymore, and Lillian Gish. Ms. Loos was one of the cinema’s earliest and most important screenwriters... and certainly one of the first women screenwriters. Here's the story:
"Anita Loos started out as a child actress in stock companies in her native San Francisco. In 1911, she mailed off her first attempt at a silent film scenario The New York Hat to D.W. Griffith and was shocked when it was accepted. Griffith put her on staff; she wrote some of his most important early pictures. Anyway, even without the provenance, this hat is quite special. Black horsehair (which is a stiff netting) in a swirled "floral" design on the crown and a sheer circled brim. Excellent condition with the only issues being that the black seems to have faded a bit to a slight purple hue (though that might be original color), and the lining needs to be re-tacked. I'm leaving as I found it as this is an historic piece, so I hate to make any changes or repairs. I will leave that to the buyer. Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece.

All the information I have on Robert Dudley is written above with the other Robert Dudley hat from this same collection. So go up this page a bit and read about him. OK... are you back now? So now we come to this very large sort of pumpkin colored velvet hat with open crown filled with black stiff netting, and then tons of black curly feathers sitting all around the wide stiff brim of the hat. Looks lovely on! Excellent condition with just a couple of the feathers at the back that just need to be trained back to formation (a drill sergeant should do the trick! :) Otherwise great. Rare to find any Dudley hats... and larger hats are harder to find as they were always harder to store over all the years. Relatives would just discard instead. Sad, but true! This hat isn't perfect as there are some light spots (see photo) and the elastic needs a replacement at some point. Meant to be worn tilted onto the forehead as you see. This one is a color somewhere between a nude purply taupe and a pale dusty rose... with a pop of color in the flower and netting. I have to tell you that this damn mannequin (shhhhh... don't tell her I cursed her!) has molded hair and so the hat wouldn't stay on her the right way, so it's on backward (I think). The long feathers will still end up this direction as you see, but on the other side of your head. Looks equally fabulous either way... but just so you know. Beaded all over with teeny tiny black beads and sequins in a 3-D effect. Then comes that great huge beaded circle at one side with the stiff black felt pieces (what do I call those??). The only other Alfeda hat I found was from the 1960's, and that added "Paris" to the label, so obviously this designer label was well-respected enough to interest the Parisian market! Ms. Loos wore size 7 gloves so they fit a normal human (so many of vintage gloves seem to be for doll hands!!). These fit me. Sadly.... so that makes me question... Do I sell them? Do I keep them? An elephant gray color nubby silk jersey draped over a high wired frame and rounded shorter crown, and gathered at low snood back. Decorated with a few simple gold flower sequins. Excellent condition with just a minor "smushing" and perhaps one of the "daisy" sequins missing?? Hard to tell for sure.. or it could just be a pick in the jersey. Really 99% perfect. SOLD# 5225 - c. 1940's/1950's Made to Order Hat, BERGDORF GOODMAN On the Plaza, New York Unique "Package" Magenta Satin Toque Hat with Bow! Owned and Worn by ANITA LOOS! Anita Loos had a collection of hats.... and I bought them all! I just love the fact that she purchased unique shapes and styles! Nothing basic! And nothing inexpensive!! :) This was specially made to order at the high-end Bergdorf Goodman store. In the 1960's, Halston began his career designing hats for Bergdorf under this same label. Though this was earlier. I've also seen Balenciaga Bergdorf Made to Order hats, so who knows who actaully designed this on! Love the shape and color or a magenta satin. It's stiff, though has the look of being "gathered" by the bow. Most likely created to match a particular outfit for Ms. Loos. Excellent condition. I'm pretty sure I saw a photo of Anita in this, or similar hat (I have another of hers of a similar feather hat also from Bergdorf Goodman with striped brown feathers, so she obviously liked this style). Very Good condition... not excellent as the top spot of the crown where all the feather start has browned. You could cover with a few extra feathers to make nearly perfect again. This hat is covered in a silver hair net to keep the feathers in place and will come with the velvet covered hat stand as you see - as this was how it was originally found. No surprise as I find I usually love this designers creations! This one is nearly impossible to explain. I call it my "witch" hat, but I could have also called it my "The Women" hat (yup, Anita Loos wrote the screenplay for that classic flick!), and the fashions worn in that film are legendary!! This is a black smushy felt with towering crown and wide wavy brim trimmed in a gold ribbon. Really something for a museum and/or design students! Excellent condition, though perhaps a little dusty. # 5290 - c. 1930's Made to Order Black Felt Cloche Hat! Owned by ANITA LOOS! I can't confirm 100%, but this looks to be the same exact style hat that Anita Loos is wearing in the photos shown here!!! Seems this was Ms. Loos' favorite style, and she may have had a few hats made in this style to match the shape of the Lanvin straw hat (shown above). Notice the shape of pointed and higher at the cheek on one side, and then longer and with a bow on the other side. Unique inverted "v" shape at the front (just like the Lanvin). Check out the pretty bow at the side. Excellent condition. NOTE: I hadn't seen this photo of Anita in the similar hat, so I didn't realize she would have worn it father back on the head. Holds on the head by the stiff loop at the back. This can be worn under the hair to hide it if you prefer. Excellent condition, though there are some pins found hidden in the feathers (but plainly seen from the inside). I'm leaving as found as this was Ms. Loos' hat. I don't know why the safety pins are there, but as these are historic hats, I'm leaving everything as I found them. Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece.

SOLD# 5211 - c. early 1950's (?) ROBERT DUDLEY, New York Hat Owned by ANITA LOOS! This is one of the Robert Dudley hats from the collection with the RTW label rather than the original striped label, but still lovely, and different. Ivory woven large "bow" cutouts attached to a stiffened matching ivory net base. Fairly flat shape on the head. Just sits on top. Quite pretty on. Good condition with some small age spots here and there (very light rust color - and very small!). The hat is slightly flattened, but will fill out on the head. You can see a bit of thread in the design of the hat, so I wonder what that means. I could come up with reasons, but I will just state the fact ma'm, just the facts. Priced to reflect the condition (most of the others are Excellent condition). Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece. $ 465. SOLD

SOLD# 5267 - c. 1950's Navy and Pink Straw Hat with Silk Flowers Owned and Worn by ANITA LOOS! Obviously this is not the hat in the photo being worn by Anita Loos, but it just shows that when she liked a style, she tended to have more than one of that look.... just like the rest of us! This hat is a lovely combination of navy and pink, so would have likely gone with a matching suit or dress. What an outfit that would have been. People always ask me what hat they can wear with a 40s day dress, as most of my pieces are dressy... but here's the perfect hat for any black dress or suit. Meant to be worn tilted onto the forehead as you see. Wear the elastic under your hair to make it look like it's defying gravity. SOLD# 5264A - c. 1960's Ermine Fur Hair Comb Hat! Owned by ANITA LOOS! I haven't seen anything like this before... well, I shouldn't say that because Anita Loos had TWO of these... one in sable, and the other here of white ermine fur! Both with large velvet bows at the front... this bow black. You know what ermine is... the fur of royalty! I'm not sure exactly how they were worn... if the bow was at the front of the hairline, or farther back on the crown, but this damn mannequin (shhhhh... don't tell her I cursed her!) has molded hair and so I just stuck it on her head wherever it might stay put long enough for the photos, and in the other photos, I used thread to hold on her!!! Please disregard that! Because on you... it will stay on the head with a comb attached at the front. Excellent condition (except for one of the ermine tails - see photo)... it can be replaced if you care. Or leave as is... as this is a memorabilia piece as she had it. I have no words to describe this hat... it's a simple black felt that looks pretty boring off the head, but as you can see, it gets pretty sensational on! Perfect for a great day look suit or simple dress. I've seen similar hats with rhinestone or jeweled pins pinned on to the front for a little extra pizzazz. So... it's like having two hats in one. This seems to have been Christian Dior's look of the 1960s! There are many of these floral design Dior hats around... so they must have been quite popular. You also see Dior turbans and feather hats as well, but these have to be the favorite! I mean... who can resist wearing a complete garden on your head?? Too bad it was a few years too early for the "flower child" generation.... rather their mother's were wearing these hats. Anyway, enough of my babbling... Pull your hair back and on those bad hair days, just put this on and look smashing. The dresses didn't need to be flashy when you were wearing this. If I think back, I'm sure my mother had one similar and wore it with a simple raw silk pink suit. One of the latest hats in the Anita Loos collection. She passed away in 1981. I had a hat collector date this to 1962. ALSO note: Lily of the Valley was Dior's favorite flower, so it's fitting that there are white lily of the valley silk flowers on this at as well! Shiny black patent leather hat in a boater shape but meant to be worn on tilted on the forehead in the 1940's fashion. Not even sure what it is about the hat that thrills me so! But obviously it thrilled Anita Loos enough as well to include in her hat collection! It's almost like the milliner had extra strips of patent leather sitting around and just started playing with them. ;) At the top of the crown are a few crisscross pieces of patent leather to "finish" off the circle. Excellent condition. Has a little wear on the pink flowers. And as always, the netting may not be perfect, but looks to be. Elastic band to hold on. Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece. $ 225. SOLD

SOLD# 5220 - c. 1930's/1940's Brown Felt Cap Hat with Wide Beaded Brim, Feather and the Original Hat Pin! Owned by ANITA LOOS! Yes, I need to be able to date hats a bit more accurately. Some are easier than others. But I SHOULD know more at this point... or perhaps I once did and old age is taking it's toll. I DO know it's a hat, so I'm not TOO far gone!! And I also know it's a GREAT hat! Brown felt cap back with a fantastic beaded and chainstitched brim with feather and original covered felt hat pin. The feather is a bit loose, but other than that (oh, and the silk inner lining has a tear - who cares!)... it's a great piece. No label, sadly. But ya gotta love it. Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece. $ 645. SOLD

SOLD# 5310 - c. 1940's Marche Hats, New York Black Felt Flat Hat with "Fringe" Feather at Front and "Loopy" Back! Owned by ANITA LOOS!Whimsical hat without going overboard. Trimmed in black satin bows. I would imagine this hat is late 1940s as it has the "flat" shape of some of the 1950s hats. Excellent condition. Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece. $ 245. SOLD

SOLD# 5244 - c. 1940's Pink and Black Felt Hat with Large Turkey Feather Owned and Worn by ANITA LOOS! I got a thing for pink. So did Anita! This hat is a non-stiff hat yet the turned brim stays put. I'm always amazed that the feathers remain intact on hats! So many years of storage and yet these were treated with care. Turkey feathers can be "combed" as you know from your own childhood American Indian costumes (I'm guessing). "Smushy" hat. Excellent condition... just a little dusty and again, netting is rarely perfect. Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece. $ 435. SOLD

SOLD# 5317 - c. 1960's Black Ruffled Whimsy Fascinator "Pouf" Hat! Owned by ANITA LOOS! Ms. Loos had lots of tiny tiny hats and fascinators like this. One of the few photos I found of Ms. Loos wearing one of these hats is below. That pouf hat has already sold... but here's another she probably loved. These were just worn with hairpins and certainly make a statement for such a tiny piece of fabric! Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece. $ 185. SOLD

SOLD# 5308 - c. 1950's Quaker-Maid Exclusive Black Felt Hat with Fabulous Large Coq Feather "Pouf" at Side! Owned by ANITA LOOS! Oh dear.... I hate it when I'm really not sure how to date something. Quaker-Maid Exclusives go back to at least the 1930's and through at least the 1960's. It's not as new as the 60's, and it seems a bit more tailored than the 30s.... anyway... I'm guessing 1950s. Very cool shape due to the nearly floating pouf of feathers at the side. Excellent condition. Normal 22" head size. Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece. $ 265. SOLD

SOLD# 5246 - c. 1940's Straw Hat with Green Velvet Ribbon and Covered in Various Silk Flowers! Owned by ANITA LOOS! Oh HAPPY SPRING HAT!!!! First of all, straw hats are just my favorite. I think it might have something to do with my childhood and the Easter hats my mother used to get for us every year. It was just an excuse for my Mom to dress up her three little girls. But I remember the hats (and the matching purses sometimes) fondly. So... then if you add all these colorful flowers and green velvet ribbon to a straw hat, well....... I would steam up the front red flower to make it stand back up, but other than that... just Put On Your Easter Bonnet! ;) The hat is held on by the thin elastic that usually is worn under the hair (but my molded hair mannequin was having nothing of that!). The netting may not be perfect (they rarely are), but in this case, it doesn't matter. Excellent condition. Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece. $ 425. SOLD

SOLD# 5314 - c. 1940's JONQUIL ORIGINAL Black Straw Topper Hat with "Autumn" Flowers at Front! Owned by ANITA LOOS! Held on with a thin elastic strap as most of the cute 1940's tilt or doll hats. This one is larger than most and has an interesting "v" shape at back. Unexpected. Excellent condition. Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece. $ 345. SOLD

SOLD# 5316 - c. 1940's KATHRYN BAKER Black Felt Hat with Blue Ostrich Feather! Owned by ANITA LOOS! This hat is likely early 1940s as it has a bit of a 1930's cap at back and the tall element found in other hats of the early 40s. Held on with a thin elastic band at back. Small felt bow at side. Very Good condition. Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece. $ 225. SOLD

SOLD# 5318 - c. 1940's HENRY POLLAK, Inc. / BELVEDERE Rust Brown Wool Felt "Riding" Hat! Owned by ANITA LOOS! Oh yeah.... LOVE this shape... as did Anita Loos.. shown wearing a similar style in 1920!! Just what you imagine when you think of a Victorian woman riding sidesaddle.... but this is a hat from the 40s with that similar look. Even down to the satin ribbon and netting bow at back. If you have a Downton Abbey party... consider going as a horsewomen! :) Anita Loos would have! :) Excellent condition. Final Sale Movie/Memorabilia piece. $ 565. SOLD

SOLD# 5250 - c. 1930's Brown Canvas and White Leather Trim Strappy Shoes! From the Estate of ANITA LOOS! If you don't know who Anita Loos is, please just Google search her... you will be impressed! She wrote (among other things) "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"... one of Marilyn Monroe's most famous movie roles. Ms. Loos had a great collection of hats, which I just purchased, and along with that hat collection came a number of pairs of her shoes from the 1930s-1940s. These shoes are so "Chanelish". Brown canvas with white leather trim... these shoes have a fabulous design. Open sides, and cutwork at front and back sides. And those white leather double stripes and white heel just "pop"! Very small size 5 as are all Ms. Loos' shoes. Excellent condition. Love the wording on the sole "Famous for Fit. Our 850 Last. Hand Turned". What the heck does that all mean anyway?? :) Obviously these are well made.
