#4839 - c. 1900 BELLINI, London Spangled Fan on Gauze with Metal Pique Embellished Horn Sticks and Original (?) Brocade Box!  NOTE: "Spangles" are also known as "Sequins".  Excellent condition fans of this type are quite hard to find... even a dedicated fan website agrees: "Spangled fans are a challenge for the collector as their restoration is difficult. First, some spangles are almost always missing, and second, the thin silk fabric becomes easily brittle at the folds."  I know as I happen to have collected these type fans in the past.  And I know they are often ripped or in a lot worse shape than this beauty!  Yes, there are a few spangles missing... mostly circular ones on the horn sticks, but still better than most!!  No rips, no broken sticks. The horn sticks assure that this was likely a fan for a fancy ball.  The box is also in Excellent condition with the Bellini, London paper label still attached.   The fan seems a bit small for the box, but the expert who sold it to me assured me that he had seen other "Bellini" fans and they were similar.  So... I can only pass on that information.  The other very interesting feature of this fan, is... if you look extremely closely there look to be scratches on one guard stick.. However on even closer inspection,  I think I can make out "Love, Krohn"!!!!!!  Ah, if only the fan could talk!!  Measures:  7" long x 13" wide. Box is 9" long.

#2100 - c. early 1930's WHITING & DAVIS Dresden Mesh Purse with Original Cardboard Box and Black Satin Presentation Case! First introduced in 1876, Whiting & Davis is world renowned for its fashionable metal mesh handbags. Still in existence today, but this is one of the original early 1930's deco designs with almost a psychedelic taupe and brown pattern in the mesh!  Quite unique!  Comes in the original black cardboard box (taped at cover edges due to splits), and then there is a black satin and gold braid  case with black and rhinestone clasp. Very Good to Excellent condition purse with just a bit of tarnish at deco "fringe", a hint of wear on the gold deco frame, and some makeup on taupe satin lining (with one tiny tear in lining).

#0374 - c. late 1870's Brown Velvet Hat! Wonderful shape. I've had this hat in my personal collection for many years. She's just now seeing the light of day! The 1880's were all about embellished tall hats with brims.. so.. voila! This one has a little of everything.... Brown velvet and light brown velvet with steel cut buckle ornament and white/brown feather. Larger than many hats of the era.. probably worn with a substantial winter outfit. Condition is very good. The brown velvet has slight wear at most all the edges, and the light brown velvet is missing much of the velvet at the back band.. the front velvet is fine. The feather is in great condition, as is the steel ornament. Measures: 5 1/2" high, varies slightly. Because Brigetta has no hair, her head is small.. but worn on a normal 22" size head (like me), the hat sits VERY HIGH on the top of the head... VERY JAUNTY! VERY IMPRESSIVE!

However when you DO put it on a head.. voila! The hat becomes great, tall, and very impressive! Black velvet gently gathered measuring 16" at longest. Decorated with dusty pink velvet ribbon, black ostrich feathers and black silk.. with pretty black jet ornament at back which gives the impression of a large dragonfly. #4140 - c. 1900 Black Raffia, Chiffon, Feather and Jet Hat! I'll give you your history lesson for the day. As far as I can gather.. hats dating prior to about 1930 do not have grosgrain ribbons around the inside of the hat. Rather have gathered silk linings as you see. OK.. school is now out! Time for recess! :) This hat has a lot going on... a basic rounded raffia (straw) shape with mid-size slight turned-up brim loaded with an interesting ruffled black chiffon, black ostrich feather and black jet horseshoe shape decoration (for good luck!). A great "every day" hat. Excellent condition. Perches on the top of the head so the size is no issue. Measures: 13" x 12".

No label. except for a Union label. Wear it down as shown, or wear up back on head. Your choice. 5 1/2" high and 21" inside.. but fits perfectly on a normal 22" head (that's me!).

#1661 - c. 1900 DYER, Boston, Mass Gray Straw Toque Hat Smothered in Ostrich Feathers and Silk Roses! This hat as been in my personal collection for many years. Every once in a while I pull out my "babies" to offer them a new home to visit for the next 10 years! It allows them to see the light of day, and to become part of my online Museum for eternity (well, perhaps not that long). Lucky you if you are the one to snap this hat up! Pink and gray ostrich feathers. Pink and white roses. Tiny off-white rosebuds. The flowers even continue partway under the brim (as you see from the interior photo). Black feathers. One pink "marble-like" hatpin still attached. Excellent condition. The decorations are all "flattened" and I have no idea if the feathers were slightly more fluffed out originally, but I don't think so. Excellent condition.

#0310 - c. mid 1800's Copper Brown Changeable Silk Quilted Bonnet! These were very popular and worn from about 1840-1860s. This wonderful silk is made from a coppery-brown changeable silk, corded and gathered over wool wadding to create warmth for this winter bonnet. The neck is curtained to keep out drafts, and the back of the bonnet is quilted for beauty. Excellent condition, but the quilting at the back has some wear to the silk (see photos), and minor silk wear on the curtain, slight fading of back as well. Still in amazing condition for this age.. and silk!

SOLD
#4129 - c. 1910's Black Sheer Lace and Floral Wired Hat! The "picture hat" which came into vogue in the teens was considered "very flattering".. and many had transparent brims of horsehair, tulle or lace. This lovely hat has both lace and horsehair on the wide flat brim. As stated in Sue Langley's hat book... "These wire frames had been used in hatmaking since the 1860s. This is the last decade that wired basket frames were commonly used in hatmaking. The more fitted cloche hats of the 1920s did away with the necessity for such rigid support." I always say I'm lucky not to have been a young woman in the 1920's as I look like hell in cloche hats and non-fitted flapper dresses. Unfortunately I have photos of my Grandmother, who DID have to live through it.. and yes, looked awful. However, in contrast, I look great in wide brim hats, so... I love this one on! Beautiful original flat velvet flower and leaves decorations.. and an interesting flower covered with the netting at the top of crown. Excellent condition. You can mold the wire a bit to look your best! A true beauty from this era! Measures: 18" x 16" x about 6" high. Will fit a normal sized head.

#0150 - c. 1903? Black Woven Straw Hat with Black Velvet Bow and Black Lace "Snood"! Ok... I confess, this hat has stumped me, but I think I finally figured it out. At first glance, it's a 1940's era hat due to the back snood net lace. However, if you look at the inside hat, the construction and lining is that of a turn-of-the-century hat. No question. Yet, I can't find any hat of that era with black snood... so... therefore I surmise that the net lace was added later... likely in the 40's to this (I believe) c. 1903 hat. Whoever did the remodeling did a very nice job as it hangs together quite well! Looks gorgeous on my mannequin. The hat is a sort-of tri-corner shape, but not really. Boy, not an easy hat to describe, eh? Will fit an average 22" head size. Excellent condition.

#3950 - c. 1960's Saks Fifth Avenue, Young Elite Petit Point (or Pettipoint) Tapestry Go-Go Boots! NEVER WORN! Back to the Future!  These look like they were never worn, so you can make believe you are going back in time to buy these at Saks Fifth Avenue, New York!  No time machine necessary!  They have a raised pettipoint design of moss green, black and dull yellow on what feels like a finely woven orangish-red silk base.  They are very thin, lightweight... so they might have been designed to wear in warmer weather.  Almost a cardboard weight feel.  Lined inside with matching green sateen. Tiny black shiny plastic heels.  Laces up the side with elastic black laces through grommet holes. Marked size 9M.  Yeah, I know... it looks like it reads "N" in the photos, but it doesn't.  Measures 11" long by 11" high x 3" wide sole. These are without fault except for an original magic marker shop mark on one sole.  These are the real thing! Original high fashion Shindig / Austin Powers "yeah baby" go-go boots.

#9129 - 1950's R.H. Stearns Co., Boston Very Soft White Genuine Rabbit Fur Flat Hat! I USUALLY know mink, sable, chinchilla, rabbit, but some of the other furs can confuse me. SO.. I took a trip to a furrier with all my "stuff", and he determined (without hesitation) that this is, indeed, Rabbit. I kept thinking it FELT like a rabbit, but it's the longest and softest rabbit fur I've seen. No shedding. The fur is attached to a classic, flat, white satin, stiff 1950's base with the typical side tabs to hold on the head. Almost "snaps" on your head... comfortably. It's the perfect fur hat to be worn with a cocktail dress... you know... when they wore hats for more than just cold weather!! Become a lady. Excellent condition.

#9248 - c. 1950's MURIEL LAYSON Deep Crimson Red Velvet Pillbox Hat! Such a beautiful color! A deep crimson red in a stiff large bow which sits on top of the head, and blends in with your hairdo (except if you have molded, painted hair like my mannequin!!). The back has two wire arms to help hold on the head, and to use as an anchor for the bobbypins. I know this means nothing, but the typeface on the label is fabulous!!!! Really! I just love great design in anything.. clothing, type, automobiles (though hard to find lately!), architecture... whatever. Anyway, back to the hat... condition is excellent with perhaps just ever so slight velvet crushing at the edges. So pretty! Under $150, so final sale.

SOLD
#3745 - 1905ish Gibson Girl White Horsehair Hat with Tons of Roses, Black Velvet and Red Flowers! It's getting harder to find the real beauties with original trimmings. And if you have a lace gown from this era, it's difficult to find a hat that will work with the delicate laces. But here she is! Pretty enough to be worn as a wedding hat. Hat base is a wire frame and has dainty red roses peeking out from underneath. The trim on the rear of the hat consists of 4 rose bouquets, there is also a white egret feather spray, but it has broken off quite a bit (easy to replace with a new egret spray - and if the delicate feathers were intact, it would be hard to mail to you that way! There are black velvet ribbons woven in thoughout the back and gathered white netting on top of the brim. Two of the rose bouquets are ivory, the other two are a light peachy pink. The flowers are some of the most lush that I’ve seen. The inside is lined in ivory china silk and has a small silk label which reads Brandeis Omaha. Approx dimensions are 13” across and 12” front to back. Excellent condition, no flaws really to report (except for the plumes that I already mentioned). The horsehair/straw is excellent, there are a few pinholes on the lining (from a hatpin), but that’s about it! This one is GORGEOUS!!
